Emporia ? An all-Free State High final in doubles propelled the Firebirds to a tennis team victory in the Emporia Invitational on Saturday.

Taylor Hawkins and Rachel Walters beat sisters Ali and Caitlin Dodd, 8-6, in the championship match of the doubles bracket.

“Finishing first as a team against such a strong field is a great result leading into Sunflower League this week,” FSHS coach Oather Strawderman said.

The Firebirds won the team title with 35 points to edge runner-up Emporia (34) and third-place Shawnee Mission East (32) in the six-team meet.

Free State’s Natalie Myers placed fourth in singles, and Berit Conway was 10th.
