100 years ago: Lawrence water still safe for drinking, Board of Health says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 23, 1914:

  • “The Lawrence water supply is safe, says Dr. S. J. Crumbine, Secretary of the State Board of Health, and while he does not give any extraordinary endorsements, he says that the University and townspeople will be safe in using the water of the present supply for the winter. Dr. Crumbine submitted a report yesterday to the Board of Administration and in this report gave the water a pass for the winter or until river water was again used.”
  • “It is the business of the city commission to settle this water question…. Now let us not lose sight of the fact that there has been too much horseplay already. There is no use in trying to buy the old plant, there is only one thing to do, to build our own plant. The city commissioners have a chance to vindicate their existence. It is up to them, not up to any other organization. Lawrence wants pure water and plenty of it. Let us get the proposition for municipal ownership before the voters. They will sustain this…. This is the business of the city commission, representing, as it does, all of the people. Hands off, special interests, and let this thing alone. It is a people’s fight.”
  • “Last night was the coolest night the people of Lawrence have experienced so far this fall. The weather bureau at the University reports that the temperature went as low as about 35 degrees. Although there was no frost on the ground this morning many maintained that it was cold enough for frost.”
  • “The Oread Golf club did not expire last night at all. The motion to disband failed, and was followed by a motion, which carried, to give the club one week in which to learn how much alone it was. That is to learn if the members were interested enough to keep up the links. If the students and faculty wish to maintain the course action will be taken on it at the next meeting of the club next Tuesday night.”
  • “The North Side Improvement Club met last night in Woodlawn school. Miss Martin’s room has been piped for gas and nice fixtures installed. The Club appreciates the kindly action of the School Board in granting them the use of this room for their meetings. The time last night was mainly taken up in discussion of plans for the improvement of this part of the city. In spite of the rain there was a good attendance, five new names being added to the roll.”
  • “Saturday is the opening game at Haskell. The game will be played between the Indians and Kansas City University. Dr. Kennedy said today that the University has a good squad this year and will give the Indians a good game.”
  • “Refusal to accept the offer of the Jayhawkers for a game on McCook has just been received from the College of Emporia. The game as planned was to fill the vacant place on the Kansas schedule — Saturday, October 10…. The Emporia team had a game early in the week with Baker University and one with Washburn a week later.”
  • “The J. W. Robertson building at 718 Massachusetts Street, is being repaired. The bricks along the top of the building were worked over so that the danger of falling pieces would be eliminated. The old stone around the entrance was cut away and is being replaced with concrete.”
