25 years ago: KU hopes for federal funds for biosciences building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 14, 1989:

A $1 million appropriation under consideration by Congress was desperately needed by Kansas University to advance planning for the construction of a new biosciences building, officials said today. “This money would provide space for expansion of activities in association with the Higuchi centers,” said Frances Horowitz, vice chancellor for research, graduate studies and public service. Horowitz said in an interview this week that the original estimate for the overall cost of the facility was $7.2 million. The goal was to secure $5 million in federal funding, she said. Sens. Bob Dole and Nancy Kassebaum announced this week that the Senate Appropriations Committee would review a recommendation that KU receive the grant for construction of the center. “The new biosciences center is a top priority for Kansas,” said Dole, Senate minority leader. “It will strengthen one of the best recognized areas of research at KU.”
