Gears and Grooves Festival to be held in South Park on Saturday

The public is invited to attend the “Gears and Grooves Festival” in South Park on Saturday, celebrating Bike MS: Kansas City, a bike ride with close to 2,000 cyclists raising money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.

There will be free music with DJs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by live music from Greg Pelligrine and Hit or Miss from 3-5 p.m., Lucas Parker and Chad Smith of MUSTARD from 5-7 p.m. and Ashes to Immortality from 7-9 p.m.

A bounce house, face painting and other activities will be available for children at the festival. EATS and the Torched Goodness food truck will serve food and the Boulevard Beer trailer and bar will offer beverages.

This is the 31st year for Bike MS: Kansas City, Kansas City’s largest charity bike event. The ride begins in Olathe at 7 a.m. Saturday, stopping in Lawrence Saturday night and ending at 5 p.m. on Sunday in Olathe. The route covers 100 miles each day.

Downtown motorists will want to be aware of the event. Plans call for the portion of Massachusetts Street that runs through South Park to be closed from 5 a.m. Saturday to noon on Sunday. North Park Street between Vermont and Massachusetts streets also will be closed to accommodate the event. Parts of South Park will be converted into a campground for participants who are spending the night in the city, and the park also will be used to house a variety of food and merchandise tents. The parking lot for the Community Building at 11th and Vermont streets also is expected to be used for the event.
