40 years ago: Haskell dorms full to capacity

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 8, 1974:

  • With late registration continuing this week, Haskell Indian Junior College was expecting at least 1,050 students to be enrolled this fall. Haskell began its fall term today with 890 students enrolled during formal registration, and at least 150 more students were expected to sign up this week. Haskell dormitories were already nearly full to capacity, according to Frank Quiring, dean of students. Quiring said four students were being assigned to rooms designed for two students. “Haskell is just really short of housing,” he said. A small dormitory, capable of housing 40 students, was to be opened at the end of this week, and new dormitories were planned with construction expected to begin the following spring.
  • Burglars struck Stouffer Place on the KU campus one night this week, entering four apartments by prying the screens off the front windows. Items taken from the apartments included a black and white television, stereo speakers, an amplifier, two tape decks, and $14 in pennies.
  • Mrs. Ralph Lawson, 1013 Connecticut, was featured in a Journal-World photo with a volunteer melon vine that had appeared this summer. The caption read in part, “She doesn’t even know how the seeds got there, but now she has a huge watermelon vine growing up the side of her house, with six 10-pounds-plus melons dangling from it. The melons are so heavy her husband fixed baskets to keep them from tumbling to the ground.”
