Letter: Golf gimmick

To the editor:

The person in charge of the parks and rec department in Lawrence needs to leave the Eagle Bend Golf course alone. As with all things in Lawrence, we are always trying to please everyone or come up with foolish plans that work for a small percentage of the population rather than a majority.

It appears that fine establishment we currently have at Eagle Bend is about to be diminished. The powers that be want to take a quality championship course in the making and turn it into a gimmick. The parks and rec guy (who does not play golf regularly), wants to put in 15-inch holes out at Eagle Bend on various days. He has already purchased the 15-inch cups.

This would be detrimental to the course. Real golfers would not play on those days. The revenue would go down. Some days, the course pulls in thousands of dollars in revenue. On the gimmick days, everything would suffer. The quality of the greens would be harmed by cutting a 15-inch hole in the surface rather than a 4-inch hole.

If he wants to play gimmick golf, let the city buy up the Orchards golf course. Eagle Bend is a quality course that will be fully paid for before long, don’t turn it into a gimmick. Please, anyone in town that plays golf, please tell the parks and rec guy to play gimmick golf someplace else.
