Preliminary report says Lawrence school enrollment went up 2 percent

An unofficial tally of enrollment by the Lawrence school district counted an extra 227 students, a 2 percent increase, compared with last year.

The preliminary count brings the total amount of K-12 students to 10,411. An official headcount, which will be given to the Kansas State Department of Education, will be taken Sept. 22. Last year, the district reported a 2 percent increase in enrollment to the state.

The numbers also show a preliminary drop of 199 students in the district’s virtual school program, down to 1,171. Superintendent Rick Doll said it is typical for the virtual school enrollment to fluctuate from year to year.

Kyle Haden, assistant superintendent of business and operations, said the district planned for an increase of 220 students in brick-and-mortar schools.
