LHS soccer routs Topeka in opener

Lawrence High's Alex Mwithiga moves the ball past Topeka High's Quinton Duran-Lobb (16) as he pushes the ball up the field during the first half on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at Lawrence High School. At right is LHS player Jared Roush.

It took an extra four days for Lawrence High’s boys soccer team to play its season-opener after lightning wiped out a match last week. Once the Lions were back on the field, they made up for any lost time.

Senior Sam Stephens found sophomore Cain Scott with a cross in the middle of the 18-yard box, and Scott drilled the ball inside of the left post for a goal just 62 seconds into the match. That set the tone for an eventual 7-0 rout over Topeka High on Tuesday at LHS.

The Lions (1-0) never slowed down, outshooting Topeka 20-2 in the first half and 33-3 in the game.

After Scott’s goal in the first minute, senior Jared Roush took advantage of a muffed catch by Topeka’s goalkeeper on a cross and swatted the ball into the back of the net.

“Getting an early goal helps so much,” Roush said. “It boosts your confidence right off the start … people can relax and know there’s not as much pressure on them.”

LHS eventually took a 4-0 lead into halftime after sophomore Charlie Carr scored from a corner kick, and senior Jakob Burdett, who assisted Carr’s goal, added a score of his own by hammering a shot just inside of the box with his right foot past the keeper, assisted by junior Brennan Davies.

“As a team, we played really well,” Burdett said. “I, as an individual, didn’t play very well, but our team played really good so I’m really proud about that.”

Burdett wasn’t happy with his touches throughout the match, but along with Stephens, they set up numerous plays for their teammates.

“We have a lot of guys who can score so it’s pretty easy to make good plays,” Stephens said.

Four minutes into the second half, junior Piper Hubbell launched a free kick from about five yards inside of midfield, and it went straight into the net, stunning the crowd as Topeka’s goalkeeper misread the ball. LHS added two more goals in the final 20 minutes as Stephens headed a pass from senior Sam Clark off the goalkeeper and into the net, and senior Logan Hawley rebounded a shot from senior Alex Mwithiga for an easy score.

“It’s too bad we only have one game this week because I think we’re kind of excited to get the next one in,” LHS coach Mike Murphy said.

The Lions will go on the road to face Blue Valley West at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
