Free State’s Venters repeats as 6A girls champ at state cross country meet

Free State High sophomore Emily Venters wrapped up a storybook season by winning her second straight Class 6A state cross country title on Friday at Rim Rock Farm.

Venters, who won every race she entered this year, won the state meet by nearly eight seconds with a time of 14:52.2, a personal-record time for her at Rim Rock.

She also led the Firebirds’ girls cross country team to second place, just behind Olathe East. FSHS sophomore Kiran Cordes added a sixth-place finish in 15:28.2, while junior Claire Sanner took 29th, junior Liv Lyche was 34th and senior Marlee Yost-Wolff finished 36th.

Free State’s boys cross country team took fourth place at state, led by junior Ethan Donley, who finished sixth in 16:23.4. Junior Tanner Hockenbury and senior Thomas Becker also finished 17th and 23rd, respectively.

Lawrence High’s lone qualifier, Nathan Pederson, placed 93rd overall in the boys race with a time of 18:26.6.
