Letter: A done deal?

To the editor:

As the police station gathers more interest just before the election, I think we need to realize that the upcoming vote isn’t about just building a new station. I believe the vote is really just determining how the new station will be paid for.

As a retired person in this city, I am tired of seeing the taxes increase every year. I know my pension isn’t doing the same. Am not sure why anyone would want to transfer here. Unfortunately, that’s another story.

I think what we need to understand is that by the time the commissioners get around to letting us in on the plans, it is probably too late. We won’t be able to stop the process. Therefore, I believe the real question for the police station is: How do we want to pay for it? I would like to vote “no” if “no” means no station. However, a “no” vote probably means my individual property taxes will need to increase to get the job done.

Since I believe the sun will rise tomorrow, I also believe the police station is a done deal. Might be better to vote “yes” so everyone builds the station with a sales tax increase, not just the home owners through the property taxes. It’s too bad we can’t let the Native Americans build a casino just outside the city limits and take a percentage of their profits to solve all the city’s money woes.
