‘Dud’ fireworks discovered as source of explosion north of Lawrence

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the sound of an explosion north of Lawrence after neighbors reported feeling the ground shake just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

Lt. Steve Lewis, spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies determined the explosion occurred at a residence in the 1400 block of North 1700 Road after “dud fireworks” ignited in an 8-foot deep burn pit as an individual was attempting to burn brush and trash.

Lewis said deputies have spoken with individuals at the residence and it had yet to be determined whether there would be a follow-up investigation. While intentionally shooting the fireworks would be illegal, Lewis said he was unsure whether the circumstances of the incident, which occurred outside city limits, would warrant charges.
