40 years ago: Local road crews bracing for bad winter

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 20, 1974:

  • Weather forecasters were already predicting an especially severe winter this year, but the local maintenance shop for the Kansas Highway Department was ready. Arnold Lebombard, superintendent at the Lawrence shop, said he wasn’t expecting any fuel problems this year, and he already had enough salt on hand for the first two snow storms of the year. The local shop, which was responsible for maintaining 106 miles of state highway, had five trucks, each of which would have snow plows when needed this winter.
  • A traffic problem in the 500 block of Wisconsin popped up this autumn shortly after the opening of a new private club, The Hideout, at 500 Wisconsin. Police were reporting that the club’s patrons were parking their cars on both sides of the street, which prevented traffic from being able to pass. Incidents had been handled so far on an individual basis, with officers asking drivers of the offending cars to move them, but the situation was likely to continue, police said. Lt. Vernon Harrell of the Lawrence Police Department said statutes prohibited the blocking of a street and that cars doing so were likely to be towed.
