Kansas soccer tops Texas, 1-0

? Ashley Williams scored in the 63rd minute, and Kansas University edged Texas, 1-0, on Friday night in Big 12 soccer. KU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud recorded the shutout.

Kansas moved to 14-1-0 on the year and remained perfect through the first half of the conference season with a 4-0-0 record. Texas dropped to 7-5-2 and is 2-2-0 in league play.

“Collectively the kids showed a lot of character tonight,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “Ashley scored an unbelievable goal. It was probably one of the best goals this year. (Kaitlyn) Stroud was also brilliant. She did a great job coming out and punching a lot of balls she had to deal with and that was key because Texas is so good on set pieces. This is the first time we’ve ever won at Texas so these players have done something that no other Kansas team has been able to do and hopefully we can keep that going.”

Stroud and the Jayhawk defense earned their eighth shutout of the season, which leads the Big 12.

The Jayhawks will return home to Rock Chalk Park to welcome perennial conference powers Texas Tech and West Virginia next weekend. The Jayhawks and Red Raiders will kick off on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Two days later, the Mountaineers will come to Lawrence for a 1 p.m. start that will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel and ESPN3.
