40 years ago: Cottonwood breaks ground on new residential building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 9, 1974:

Cottonwood Inc., Lawrence’s center for training for people with developmental disabilities, broke ground this week on a new residential center. The structure, located east of the Cottonwood building on West 31st, was to be the first phase of the center’s residential living program, designed to teach people to live independently in the community. Phase two, according to director Gary Condra, was what the Journal-World referred to as a “halfway house” for women at Eighth and Ohio and another for men at Seventh and Connecticut. The third phase was apartment living with a Cottonwood staff member, usually a Kansas University student, for a roommate. Condra explained that many people came to Cottonwood directly from a state institution or the family home and had no previous experience in independent living. The new building was to house eight people with live-in house supervisors. The 5,000-square-foot structure was to be built with $61,000 from Cottonwood’s building fund, but a fundraising campaign was to be launched to pay for an estimated $12,000 to $15,000 in furnishings. The project was to be finished in January, Condra said.
