Firebirds rip SM South

Free State's Isreal Lumpkins chases down a shot that went wide as he is trailed by Shawnee Mission South player Sam Schneck during the first half, Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 at Free State High School.

Free State High boys soccer players were happy with the result but not with how they played.

“We think we still have our best soccer in the bag somewhere, and we’re reaching to go grab that,” Free State coach Kelly Barah said after his team’s 4-1 victory over Shawnee Mission South at FSHS on Tuesday. “We have a lot of season left as well to go do that.”

Free State players were frustrated with the way they moved the ball and struggled to keep possession.

But that didn’t stop them from scoring, as the Firebirds (7-3-1) jumped on the scoreboard in the 16th minute when senior Daniel Clarke dribbled the ball into the box, but before he could shoot, a defender knocked the ball loose. However, senior Randall Schmidt was there for the open shot and score.

“We focused on maybe getting off to a quicker start than we had in the last couple games,” Schmidt said. “We were just able to exploit that gap and I got the ricochet goal — lined it up and tapped it in.”

Near the end of the first half, junior Will Laufer drilled a free kick from about 30 yards away to the upper right corner of the net in the 35th minute.

Less than three minutes into the second half, the Firebirds scored again, after junior Jordan Patrick’s corner kick went into a crowd of players and junior Isreal Lumpkins’ shot went to the upper left-hand corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

Free State sophomore Toufik Ahmmed added his first goal of the year in the final minutes, assisted from freshman Alejandro Carballido, as the Firebirds pushed their win streak to three games.

“It’s good to get this winning streak, but like coach says, we have to find a way to represent how we can play soccer,” Lumpkins said. “The win doesn’t necessarily show how we played the game. We need to give the fans a good game and show how we can really play.”

The Firebirds will go on the road to play Olathe North at 7 p.m. Thursday.
