40 years ago: Haworth Hall damaged in weekend fire

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 7, 1974:

  • A weekend fire of undetermined origin had caused an estimated $5,000 damage in Haworth Hall on the Kansas University campus. Firefighters reported that the blaze had started in building materials in a stairwell on the second floor and that fire damage was limited to a small section of the ceiling. However, heavy smoke damage had occurred throughout the entire building.
  • Ballasts were being installed this week in 45 downtown street lights. Employees from Huxtable Electric Co. Inc. were installing the ballasts for the lights, which had been found defective over the summer and which had not worked for several weeks. Repairs had been delayed by weeks of negotiations to determine whether the city, the contractors, or the manufacturers were responsible for the failed lights. In the end, it had been agreed that the ballast manufacturers would replace the devices. The job was being done at no cost to the city, according to Lawrence City Manager Buford Watson.
  • Carl J. Drake, 84, of Perry, had passed away this week. Mr. Drake, born in 1889 in Ottawa, had moved to Lawrence in 1928 and established Drake’s Bakery. After retiring in 1958, he had moved to Florida, but had returned to Lawrence in 1962 and had moved to Perry two years later.
