Voting to begin for Jewelers for Children local grant program

Kizer Cummings Jewelers, 833 Massachusetts St., nominated The United Way of Douglas County’s Education Goal as their favorite nonprofit organization to be entered into Jewelers for Children’s local grant program, which will give $10,000 awards to ten local children’s charities around the nation.

Jewelers for Children is a nonprofit organization founded by the jewelry industry in 1999 that is dedicated to helping children in need, according to Ernie Cummings of Kizer Cummings Jewelers.

In order for United Way of Douglas County’s Education Goal to win a $10,000 grant, it must be among the top 10 vote recipients on the Jewelers for Children Facebook page, Cummings said. Voting will last from Oct. 6 through 19 and can be done at www.facebook.com/JewelersforChildren. Votes may be cast daily.

Micki Chestnut, communications director for United Way of Douglas County, said the organization felt honored to have been selected for the voting contest.

“We are really honored that the jewelry store thought so highly of our work in education to nominate us,” Chestnut said. “If we won, it could put Lawrence on the map for providing excellent educational opportunities for children.”
