40 years ago: Concert delayed while missing music brought from Baldwin

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 5, 1974:

  • The Lawrence Symphony Orchestra had needed to wait about 50 minutes to open its 1974-75 season at the Lawrence High School auditorium when it had been discovered just before concert time that some necessary music was still in Baldwin. Director George Lawner explained to the audience that the music required by one of the solo performers was in Baldwin but that efforts were under way to obtain it. Lawner explained that the concert could go on with the performer “faking it,” but that since the concert was to be recorded, he had chosen to wait for the music. When the concert started a little under an hour later, the audience reaction was reported to be warm and enthusiastic.
  • Bids for Kansas University’s new Visual Arts Building were to be taken early in 1975, according to Keith Lawton, director of facilities planning and operations. Lawton said he hoped bids could be taken early enough for the 1975 Legislature to allow final appropriations on the $5.75 million project. The 112,000-square-foot building, scheduled for completion by the fall of 1977, was to house KU’s Division of Fine Arts, a part of the Fine Arts School. The building was to constructed between Murphy and Lindley halls and would incorporate the Fowler Shops into its south end.
