Storms, cooler temps

More thunderstorms are likely this morning. Then there is a the chance of scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. A few storms may be severe. The high will be a breezy 72 degrees, and winds will be from the south-southeast, shifting to northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain is 80 percent.

Buena Vista battle

The “Decisive Battles” Fort Leavenworth lecture series continues with “Forgotten Transcendence: The Battle of Buena Vista, 1847” with Dr. Gregory Hospodor, at 3 p.m. at the Dole Institute, 2350 Petefish Drive. The series brings scholars from the Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth on the first Thursday of every month through November.

Pop poetry

Tony Trigilio’s poems tell stories about alien abductions, vampiric soap operas and Kennedy-assassination conspiracy theories. Trigilio will read from his work at 4 p.m. in the English Room of the Kansas Union, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd.. The reading is free and open to the public. There will be a question-and-answer period and book-signing afterward.
