FSHS golfers 12th at Alvamar

Most of Free State High’s girls golfers left Alvamar Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon with some disappointment.

Whether it was with their drives, short game, or anything in between, the Firebirds struggled to replicate how well they can swing during practice in their rounds at the Lawrence Invitational.

“I struggled a lot with — my whole swing is kind of a catastrophe right now,” said senior Karen Campbell, who shot a 96 to tie for 43rd place. “It’s completely inconsistent. I don’t know.”

The Firebirds finished 12th in the team standings with a total of 377 strokes.

Free State senior Emily Bermel shot an 85, which tied her for 20th place, but dropped her one spot to third place in the Sunflower League standings after two of the three legs. Bermel is seven strokes back from league leader Jessica Parker of Shawnee Mission East, who leads with a total of 165 strokes.

For Campbell, she had a much better day putting than she did last week, but she’s struggled with consistency.

“All things considered it was a lot better than last week, for sure,” Campbell said. “Whenever our first tournament out here was, I shot an 86. And now I’m up to 96. I feel like I’m not really progressing like I should be this season.”

Though the Firebirds didn’t match their expectations, there were some highlights. Senior Erin Meyers shot a 97, improving from a score of 104 at Alvamar earlier this season, and senior Savannah Reeb improved her score to a 97, after shooting a 127.

“My drives were pretty good,” said Reeb, who was disappointed with her putting. “I’ve been working on that in practice a lot, so I’m happy with how they were.”

Lawrence High’s only golfer, Bonnie Reinsch, shot a 116. Reinsch, the only Lions golfer who competes at varsity tournaments, has struggled with consistency this season.

“I think it’s hard because she doesn’t have anyone to push her,” LHS coach Kristen Samp said. “The other girls are such beginners — they’re just too different. She doesn’t have anybody at her level. It makes it really hard for her. She’s just kind of out there by herself.”
