Letter: Pay it forward

To the editor:

Early evening, on Nov. 22, after I had shopped for groceries at Hy-Vee, I couldn’t get my car started. I stopped a man who was going into Hy-Vee and asked if he could help me.

He couldn’t start the car either, but he said he’d get some jumper cables to give the battery a boost. A Hy-Vee employee helped him get the jumper cables and he got my car started. I offered to pay him, but he said, “I wouldn’t be setting a very good example for my kids if I accepted money for helping someone that needed help.”

I didn’t get his name, but I know he is a Good Samaritan. When I was home safely, I followed his good example and wrote a check to the Salvation Army, knowing that would help others in need.
