40 years ago: Winter makes unofficial arrival with snow, bitter cold temps

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 29, 1974:

  • Lawrence’s first touch of winter had come and was expected to stay for several days. The area had received an inch of snow overnight, which was melting slowly today as temperatures remained in the 20s and low 30s. A traveler’s advisory had been issued for the extreme eastern and southeastern Kansas regions as occasional snow was expected again today. The bitter cold this Thanksgiving weekend had caused a layer of melted and then refrozen ice and snow on local roadways, leading to transportation problems around town; fortunately traffic was lighter than usual due to the holiday.
  • Lawrence policeman Ronnie D. Barnhardt, 23, was hospitalized today with injuries suffered in a collision between his police car and another vehicle. Barnhardt was in Lawrence Memorial Hospital with leg, rib, back, and neck injuries suffered when his squad car, which had been southbound on Massachusetts, collided with a northbound car when the officer had attempted a left turn at 17th. The other vehicle’s driver and passenger were treated at Watkins Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.
