100 years ago: LHS students celebrate winning football season

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 29, 1914:

  • “A holiday in honor of the football team going through the season without a defeat was granted the students of the High school in a special meeting of the board of education this morning. Monday will be the holiday. The board of education feels that it is a genuine honor to Lawrence High school to have a football team that has gone through two seasons without a defeat. The High school students will be given an entire day in which to celebrate the great victory of the team…. Girls as well as boys helped to celebrate the home coming of the never-defeated football team last night. The students of the High School marched in lock step down Massachusetts street, singing and cheering. Boxes, barrels, and anything that would help build a bonfire disappeared from alleys and streets. A fire was kindled near the High School building, but speeches and cheers were cut short by the appearance of the fire department. Some one had turned in a false alarm from 1136 Kentucky and the returning firemen turned the hose on the High School jubilee. The enthusiasm then turned to pictures shows and the Patee, Aurora and Grand had to stand the consequences.”
  • “Complaint against the boy who turned in the false alarm of fire last night during the High school rally was made by the chief of police today and the boy was turned over to the juvenile court. Every time the fire department is called out it costs the city about $35 and they do not think it is right for the city to pay so much for the pleasure of the boys seeing the wagon make the run. The city officials are making an attempt to stop this unnecessary expense. The fire department has been called out three times on false alarms during the past two weeks and the city officials are doing all in their power to see that the performance is not repeated.”
