Local artist to celebrate 90th birthday with retrospective at Pachamamas today

The public is invited to attend a very special birthday party today at Pachamamas, 800 New Hampshire St.

From 5 to 9 p.m., the restaurant will host a retrospective exhibit of works by Lawrence artist Jay Hines. A lifelong Kansan and World War II veteran, Hines is celebrating his 90th birthday this month.

The former airman, who also played tennis at Kansas Wesleyan University, had never painted before retiring from a successful business career in his sixties. He soon discovered a natural talent for art, and has since devoted much of his life to improving his technique — from buildings, to people, to wildlife, to landscapes, Hines can “do it all.”

His Pachamamas exhibit is curated by his granddaughter Morgan Hines, a recent Kansas University graduate and server at the restaurant.
