Two automobile accidents end in fatalities in Jefferson County

Two fatal automobile accidents occurred in Jefferson County on Saturday.

At 4:33 p.m., a two-car accident occurred westbound on Kansas Highway 16 about 1.5 miles east of Oskaloosa, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

After passing a pickup, 17-year-old Hunter Levi Terrell, of McLouth, lost control and skidded into the westbound lanes where he was hit by a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban, according to the highway patrol. The Suburban stopped in its lane. Terrell’s 2007 Honda Civic came to rest in the north ditch. According to the highway patrol, both vehicles came to rest upright. Terrell died on the scene.

There were six passengers in the Suburban: Carolanne Todd, 26; Blayne Josling, 10; Erika Josling, 7; Jeremiah Copp, 6; and Harlee Todd and Teagan Josling, both 1. All were taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. Their conditions will not be released by the family’s request.

The second fatal accident occurred at 7:32 p.m. on 22nd Street, about 2.5 miles northwest of Perry.

According to the highway patrol, Dennis R. Bedford, 56, of Perry, was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry westbound on 22nd Street when he failed to slow down on a curve. The Camry went off the road and into the south ditch. According to the highway patrol, the Camry went down an embankment, flipped over and caught fire. Bedford died at the scene.
