Senior left guard Ngalu Fusimalohi, who, last week, missed the first game of his two-year Kansas University career, is finished for the season.

Interim head coach Clint Bowen on Tuesday said that the right leg injury that knocked Fusimalohi (6-foot-2, 315 pounds) out of the Iowa State game and kept him for dressing for last week’s showdown with TCU was significant enough for the training staff to shut him down.

“Unfortunately, Ngalu will be out for the remainder of the season,” said Bowen of the former junior-college transfer who started 21 straight games at left guard for the Jayhawks before missing last week.

True freshman Junior Visinia (6-4, 360) filled in for Fusimalohi in both games — with senior guard Mike Smithburg sliding into Fusimalohi’s left guard spot and Visinia playing on the right — and Bowen said he was encouraged by what he had seen.

“I think the thing that’s most pleasing is that he’s handled it mentally,” Bowen said of the Grandview, Missouri, native. “He hasn’t let the game get too big for him and he competes and fights.”
