Local religious leaders begin new organization focusing on local justice issues

Religious leaders in Lawrence have founded a new organization tasked with addressing local justice issues.

According to a news release, Justice Matters features 450 members from 20 local church congregations. It has distinguished three issues as its focus: mental health, children and affordable housing/homelessness.

Over the winter, the organization plans to conduct research on each problem with the eventual intention of lobbying for solutions.

The news release identifies Rev. Verdell Taylor of St. Luke’s AME Church as co-chair; Rev. Justin Jenkins of Velocity Church as recording secretary; Rev. John McDermott of Morning Star Church as co-president; Dr. Moussa Elbayoumy of the Islamic Society of Lawrence as outreach coordinator; and Ben MacConnell as coordinator.
