Saturday snow, winds prompt Winter Weather Advisory for Douglas County

Lawrence and Douglas County will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Topeka issued the advisory Friday in advance of a weather system that will bring snowfall of 2 to 3 inches to the area.

The heaviest snow is expected between 6 a.m. and noon on Saturday, with southeast winds around 10 mph. As snow tapers off in the afternoon and evening, winds will shift to the northwest and increase to 10-15 mph, possibly causing snow to blow back over the roads.

The National Weather Service cautions that roads are likely to become snow packed, resulting in difficult and hazardous traveling conditions.

Cold temperatures will also persist through the weekend, with highs in the low 30s to upper 20s and a Saturday night low of 17 degrees. By Sunday morning, wind chill values are expected to drop to single digits.
