Several inches of snow could fall Saturday in Lawrence

It’s been a colder-than-normal November, but things may be even more winterlike Saturday in Lawrence.

The National Weather Service in Topeka issued a Winter Weather Advisory, to last from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lawrence was expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of snow on Saturday, with most of it coming between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., NWS meteorologist Kyle Poage said Friday. Early Saturday morning, the weather agency revised its projections to 1 to 3 inches.

No matter the final accumulation, roads could become hazardous and visibility may be limited. Winds are expected to blow at 10 to 15 miles per hour to the southeast during the heaviest snowfall, before shifting to the northwest in the evening, which may cause snow to drift back onto roads.

Temperatures Saturday will hold between 20 and 31 degrees. Sunday, meanwhile, brings a 20 percent chance of additional snow before noon, with temperatures resting between 14 and 28 degrees.

City crews will treat roads in priority order from most traveled to least traveled. Generally, “arterial” streets such as Iowa and Sixth, as well bus routes, school routes and areas surrounding major employment centers are taken care of first. Then comes “collector” streets like Tennessee or Lawrence Avenue, followed by residential roads.

Saturday, road crews plan to break out at 7:30 a.m. to begin a 12-hour shift of snow operations. With Kansas University hosting football and women’s soccer games Saturday, crews will also monitor the areas around Memorial Stadium and Rock Chalk Park.

The city has already pretreated all primary and secondary roadways in anticipation of the snowfall. The roads were treated with a salt brine mix that helps keep ice and snow from bonding to the pavement.

The city has also made available several websites where the public can get news on snow operations:
