Man pleads not guilty to first-degree murder in March homicide; no arrests made in suspicious weekend death

As investigators continue to search for a suspect in a suspicious weekend death at Cedarwood Apartments, a 29-year-old Topeka man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges in connection with an unrelated homicide at the same apartment complex in March.

Archie Lamont Robinson pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery in connection with the death of Patrick Roberts, 39, of Lawrence.

Robinson’s co-defendant Dustin D. Walker pleaded not guilty in June to the same charges.

Roberts died shortly after two men kicked in the door to his duplex, confronted Roberts and shot him in the abdomen, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors allege Robinson and Walker were the men in the duplex, but at a preliminary hearing in October, two witnesses to the homicide could not identify Robinson.

Robinson and Walker remain in the Douglas County Jail on $1 million bond each while they wait for their February trials.

Meanwhile, Lawrence police discovered a dead woman in her residence at Cedarwood Apartments on Sunday, about six months after the Robinson homicide.

Police suspect the woman’s death was a homicide because her apartment showed signs that a violent incident had occurred, spokesman Trent McKinley said Monday.

As of Thursday, the investigation continues, though detectives have left the scene.

Police are awaiting autopsy results to positively identify the victim and to determine if the death was a homicide, McKinley said

Police have not made arrests and no suspects have been identified in connection with the death, McKinley said.
