40 years ago: LPD can’t spare officers for drug squad

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 11, 1974:

Lawrence Police Chief Richard Stanwix responded today to a recent suggestion by Douglas County Commissioners that his department could afford to contribute two men to a federally-funded drug squad. Sparing the two officers would be difficult and might cost the city up to $24,000 in an 18-month period, Stanwix said today. No decision had been made about participation in the program, which could go forward if the county would supply the city’s matching funds for a Law Enforcement Assistance Administration grant. The squad was to consist of 10 persons from Shawnee, Douglas, and Jefferson counties. The police department did have officers with experience in drug work, Stanwix said, but for his department to furnish two persons at salaries of $8,000-$9,000 a year would mean a cost to the city of up to $24,000. County officials had said previously that neither the County Sheriff’s Office nor the county attorney’s office could spare a staff member for the squad.
