40 years ago: Gov. Docking’s papers to be donated to KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 8, 1974:

Kansas University Chancellor Archie Dykes confirmed today that Gov. Robert Docking was planning to donate his official papers to the Kansas Collection of the Spencer Research Library at KU. “We have talked about it a time or two in the past several months,” Dykes said today. The papers, Dykes said, would include official correspondence, matters from Docking’s political life, and other documents, both official and unofficial. Docking was possibly also going to contribute the papers of his father, the late George Docking, who in 1956 had become Kansas’ first Democratic governor in 20 years. Speaking of the donation, Alexandra Mason, assistant director for special collections at KU Libraries, said, “I would be delighted to have this collection for KU. It would be tremendous to have the papers…. They will be very useful for researchers in history and political science.” Outlining the procedure for cataloging and storing the papers after they are received, Mason explained the advantages of having the placed securely in an archives. “For one thing, it is very difficult for a private person to take care of a large body of papers,” she said. “They need a constant environment, with constant temperature and humidity and an acid-free atmosphere. For another, it is very difficult for a private person to otherwise make the papers available to researchers. He would have to make his home into a reading room.”
