Douglas County voter turnout comes in short of expectations

Voter turnout in Douglas County wasn’t as strong as election officials had expected.

Turnout came in at 48 percent, according to the unofficial vote totals from the Douglas County Clerk’s office. County Clerk Jamie Shew had projected about a 60 percent turnout, or about 45,000 voters. Voters cast just less than 37,000 votes in the county.

Vote totals won’t become official until election officials canvass the vote on Nov. 13. Shew said the county received about 1,700 provisional ballots that election officials will have to review. Provisional ballots are ballots cast that have some questions attached to them, such as whether the voter was properly registered or was voting in the proper polling place.
