40 years ago: Gas service off the hook for Lawrence explosion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 1, 1974:

The Kansas Public Service Gas Co., suppliers of natural gas in Lawrence, had been absolved of responsibility in an explosion Oct. 4 that destroyed the Accurate Telephone Secretarial Service Co. building, 612 Massachusetts. A report issued today by the Kansas Corporation Commission Department of Utilities found the KPS employee who turned on the gas in the building the day of the explosion had properly informed the occupants of the existence of a gas leak that needed to be repaired. The KPS employee had then turned the gas off, but an unauthorized person, not an employee of KPS, had turned the gas back on later that afternoon. The fire had left two Kansas University students, Constance Willbern and Louann Lee, with first- and second-degree burns.
