From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 28, 1989:

• A survey of Lawrence High School students of the Class of ’89 showed them to be of an average age of 17.75 years, with nearly 63 percent planning to go to a four-year college and 39.69 percent setting their sights on Kansas University. More than a third — but not as many as in previous years — said they drank alcohol at least once a week; 56.91 percent described themselves as liberal, and 43.09 percent as conservative; nearly 62 percent said they were sexually active and 77 percent reported they’d had jobs while going to school. “I think we’ll be remembered as a class that likes to have a good time, but we really know when to slow down,” said Andy Morton, the senior chosen to speak for the class at tonight’s graduation ceremonies. “We’re level-headed.”
• In Beijing, tens of thousands of students formed a huge procession today and marched east from Tiananmen Square to press their demands for democratic reforms. One student said the goal of the march was “to have Chinese from throughout the world unite” in demanding that the government grant greater political freedom.
