25 years ago: Local agency loses executive director

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 27, 1989:

Just two months after having taken the position of executive director of Independence Inc., Burton Pusch had submitted his resignation. He was the second person to leave the agency suddenly in the past eight months. Pusch cited “personal and family reasons” for his departure, explaining that his sister had given birth to a child with a severe disability. “I really feel I need to be there both emotionally and maybe economically and do whatever I can to help,” Pusch said, adding that he was exploring job opportunities in Arkansas to be near his family. He also added that he and the board may have had different views on the agency. “They thought they were in sort of a growth phase, and I think we’re in a need-to-organize phase. Times change. Things change and people change,” he said. “There are difficult situations at Independence Inc. but nothing which is going to jeopardize the center.”
