LHS special education staff receives $1,000 teamwork award

Lawrence High’s special education staff received the Lawrence Public Schools’ annual Teamwork Award at the school’s year-end faculty luncheon, earning $1,000 to be used toward team activities.

Superintendent Rick Doll awarded the staff, highlighting the team’s welcoming of new staff while also transitioning to a new system for Individualized Educational Plans for students in 2013-14.

“This team has embraced technology and improved communication among the special education staff, between special education and general education staff and with students and parents,” Doll said in a news release.

Doll said the team also redesigned transition services and improved special education services using data-based decisions about student needs and goals.

The team, which includes special education teachers and paraprofessionals, is led by Lawrence High’s administrative staff. Special education teachers recognized as members of the team included: Brad Page, Jeff Melcher, Le Tran, Cheryl Hughes, Jeanne Yantzie, Jennifer Wingert, Heidi Woods, Lindsay Buck, Christina Achten, Claudean McKellips, Mike Hymer, Mallory Hancock, Brandon Lytle, Liz Fahy, Mindy Dechant, Maren Santelli, Liz Crickard, Mistie Copas-Thomas, Janelle Whisler, Sylvia Trevino-Maack, Janette Michaels and Tom Birt.
