25 years ago: New school buildings filling up quickly

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 23, 1989:

It was possible that recently added classroom space in Lawrence’s elementary schools could fill up faster than had been estimated by school board members and administrators three years earlier. It seemed certain at least that schools on the west side of town ere filling up faster than schools on the east side. With funding from the 1986 bond issue, the district had built Quail Run School and large additions at Kennedy and Schwegler, as well as a special education addition at Hillcrest. Board member Mary Lou Wright said this week that Quail Run and the Schwegler addition were filling faster than expected, but they were not yet at capacity. Kennedy, on the east side, was not filling as quickly. Wright, who was serving on the district’s new Boundary Committee, said the committee was recommending that kindergartners from the Parkmar subdivision in southwest Lawrence be bused to Schwegler School rather than to Broken Arrow School next year, as Broken Arrow was facing immediate crowding problems in the lower grades.
