Two Lawrence men were taken by helicopters to area trauma centers to be treated for apparent stab wounds that prompted an investigation by police that spanned nearly five hours early Friday morning.

An anonymous person called from a home in the 100 block of Maple Street in North Lawrence at 1:35 a.m. and told dispatchers someone at the home fell on a glass table and was seriously injured.

When officers arrived, they found a 37-year-old Lawrence man with serious injuries from apparent stab wounds, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police spokesman. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital by helicopter. McKinley said the victim and “numerous other individuals at the scene” were uncooperative with officers and significantly hindered the investigation.

McKinley also said a suspect apparently fled the scene before police arrived, only to resurface during another incident hours later at an apartment in the 2400 block of Ousdahl Road. There, McKinley said, a 24-year-old Lawrence woman called police at 6:12 a.m. when a 53-year-old man she knew refused to leave her home.

McKinley said the man, who had blood on his shirt, retrieved a knife and attempted to stab the caller before police arrived. The woman suffered wounds to her hand, McKinley said, and police determined that the man was the same person who fled the stabbing scene in North Lawrence. McKinley said the man had serious stab wounds to his torso that police presume was from the earlier incident and he was taken by air to a Topeka trauma center. The woman was later treated for her wounds at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
