Lawrence elementary schools will get a nice donation Friday from Cans for the Community, a nonprofit that collects and recycles aluminum cans to help support Douglas County organizations.

Cans for the Community beat its April goal by recycling 5,111 pounds of aluminum cans to celebrate Earth Day, generating $3,500 in proceeds for the local schools. The nonprofit's board members will deliver $250 apiece to 14 elementary schools Friday.

Since August 2005, Cans for the community has generated $135,500 for local nonprofits. For more info, visit cansforthecommunity.org.

Thank you to everyone who believes that recycling aluminum cans is important. We were thrilled with the overwhelming support we received during the month of April. It is very difficult to recycle 5,111 pounds of aluminum cans in one month and it's a goal we've never achieved in 9 yrs.. We are looking to delivering checks to 14 USD497 elementary schools this Friday!
