Lawrence elementary schools will get a nice donation Friday from Cans for the Community, a nonprofit that collects and recycles aluminum cans to help support Douglas County organizations.

Cans for the Community beat its April goal by recycling 5,111 pounds of aluminum cans to celebrate Earth Day, generating $3,500 in proceeds for the local schools. The nonprofit’s board members will deliver $250 apiece to 14 elementary schools Friday.

Since August 2005, Cans for the community has generated $135,500 for local nonprofits. For more info, visit cansforthecommunity.org.
