Police continue to investigate overnight stabbing at Centennial Park

Lawrence police continue to investigate an overnight stabbing in Centennial Park.

Officers were dispatched to the park shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday, where they called an ambulance for a 31-year-old man with multiple lacerations, including a large laceration on his back, said Kim Murphree, Lawrence Police Department spokeswoman.

The man told police he and a woman were arguing as they walked from Hillcrest Shopping Center at Ninth and Iowa streets toward his home in the 3000 block of West Seventh Street. He said another man approached and that the two men got into a fight.

Murphree said the altercation happened in a grassy area at the southwest corner of the park, near Ninth Street and Rockledge Road. The victim told police the suspect did not steal from or threaten him during the incident.

Murphree said the weapon used to stab the victim was unknown. The woman, who was with the victim when police arrived, was not hurt.

Police had not arrested anyone in connection with the incident Monday afternoon, and the case remained under investigation, she said.
