Editorial: Not just lucky

The thousands of hours of time donated by St. Patrick’s Day volunteers are a great gift to the community.

It takes a lot more than the luck of the Irish to pull off the annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Lawrence.

The parade that draws thousands of spectators to Massachusetts Street each year is just one of many activities planned by the local committee. The parade is a lot of fun for both participants and spectators, but the broader goal of the St. Patrick’s Day committee is to raise money for community groups that benefit local children.

In the last 26 years, the all-volunteer St. Patrick’s Day organization has donated $750,000 to such groups. This year’s proceeds will be divided between two groups: Bikers Against Child Abuse and Baby Jay’s Legacy of Hope. Final fund-raising totals haven’t been announced yet, but we’re confident those groups won’t be disappointed.

The St. Patrick’s Day committee is another great example of the community spirit that makes Lawrence so special. Congratulations on another successful year.
