Eudora boys, SFT girls advance at state

? Eudora High sophomore Austin Downing made a layup with seven seconds left to lift the EHS boys basketball team over top-seeded Andale, 44-43, on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Class 4A-II state tournament at Hartman Arena.

Fourth-seeded Eudora (19-5) will play second-seeded Scott City (21-3) at 6:15 tonight in the state championship game.

The Cardinals trailed by 11 in the second quarter and by six to begin the fourth. Senior Andrew Ballock and freshman Mitchell Ballock combined for a few steals and layups to start a 6-0 run to tie the game at 32. Later in the fourth quarter, Andrew Ballock grabbed a steal and made a layup to tie the game before Andale answered with a three-pointer. Andrew Ballock then drove past his defender for a layup to cut the score to 43-42 with 48 seconds left.

Andale missed the front-end of a one-and-one free throw with 22 seconds remaining before Downing shot over two defenders for the game-winning basket.

Mitchell Ballock scored 11 of his game-high 14 points in the second half. Andrew Ballock finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Downing had a game-high seven rebounds to go along with nine points.

Santa Fe Trail girls 46, Burlington 31

Park City — Santa Fe Trail’s girls basketball team jumped to an eight-point lead after the first quarter and used a big run in the third quarter to blow past top-seeded Burlington in the semifinals of the Class 4A-II state tournament.

The fourth-seeded Chargers (21-3) will face second-seeded Frontenac (22-2) at 4 p.m. today in the state championship.

Shelby Dahl and Amber Moore each scored a team-high 12 points, while Jaeden Romine had a game-high 10 rebounds.
