Lawrence Public Library to close for a week in late April

The Lawrence Public Library will close for a week in late April to implement a new bar code technology onto its items.

Doors will be closed from April 28 through May 2 so staff can apply RFID tags, or intelligent bar codes, onto every one the library’s 200,000 items, according to spokeswoman Jeni Daley.

The benefit of the new technology won’t be felt until the library moves back into its newly renovated location on Vermont Street, where the tags will interact with new security and book-sorting systems, as well as new self-checkout desks. Renovation is expected to be completed this summer.

Daley said the tags will help streamline checkouts and the process of sorting and reshelving items, allowing the library to repurpose staff hours. The new security system will be similar to those often seen in retail stores, to ensure items that are not checked out do not leave the building.
