Kansas University journalism class creates Statehouse wire service

A Kansas University journalism class has created its own wire service reporting from the state Capitol in Topeka.

The KU Statehouse Wire Service allows journalism students to produce stories on Kansas government to be published in newspapers across the state, including the Journal-World. This is the first year for the wire service, but this is the third year Professor Scott Reinardy has led the Statehouse Reporting class at the Capitol.

Aside from writing articles, the students also gain experience in using new media by providing regular updates on social media from the House and Senate floors. To view the students’ tweets, follow @KUwire on Twitter.

Students involved in the program gain real-world experience. Many former Statehouse Reporting students have gone on to accept jobs and internships with newspapers around the country.
