40 years ago: KU fans create ‘perhaps the loudest din ever’ as Jayhawks defeat Wildcats at Allen Fieldhouse

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 10, 1974:

  • Contrary to pre-game rumors, no streakers had appeared as an unscheduled part of the KU-K State game this week, but the capacity crowd of 17,000 didn’t seem to miss them. The spectators had “created perhaps the loudest din ever heard in the arena,” according to an article today, as they witnessed the Jayhawks beat their rivals 60-55, winning the Big Eight title and an NCAA regional berth. “Allen Fieldhouse has had some huge and noisy crowds in its day,” Bill Mayer wrote today, “but nobody who’s been around since 1956 could recall any that generated the sustained, ear-splitting layers of sound that predominated when the KU team hit a hot streak, or wrapped things up in the final minute.”
  • A bill authorizing more than $225,000 for building a park at Clinton Reservoir passed the Kansas House this week and was headed toward Gov. Docking’s desk. The state funds, to be used in 1975, included $25,000 for an office building, $17,000 for a maintenance building, and $120,000 for a water treatment plant to supply water for the recreation area on the north side of the lake.
