City teen breaks national swimming record

Lawrence native Michael Andrew broke the national record in the 100-yard breaststroke for the 13-14 year old age group Friday in the Speedo Champions Series sectional meet at Jenks, Okla.

Andrew, 14, sped past his competition in a time of 54.04, which breaks his own record that he set earlier this year. He owns records in six other races in his age group, and he also took first-place in the 100-yard butterfly at the meet.

Free State freshman Jordan Portela took sixth-place in the 200-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly. FSHS junior Josh Terrell finished in eighth-place in the 100-yard breaststroke while junior Courtney Caldwell took second-place in the 100-yard butterfly and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.
