40 years ago: Plans discussed for East Lawrence community center

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 8, 1974:

  • Plans for a community center in East Lawrence were to be discussed at an upcoming meeting of members of the East Heights Teacher Corps and community group representatives. The East Heights Teacher Corps had received a $3,600 federal grant to establish and furnish a community center, and the group was seeking views from such groups as Penn House and the Ballard Center.
  • Workers this morning were seen installing new traffic signals at downtown crosswalks. The lower part of the signal, reading “walk” and “don’t walk,” were to face pedestrians.
  • Movies showing in Lawrence this week included “Paper Moon,” “The Sting,” “The Seven-Ups,” “Serpico,” “Chariots of the Gods?” and “The Paper Chase.”
