Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson warned residents on Thursday of scam phone calls from people identifying themselves as representatives of home medical equipment and supply companies asking for Medicare insurance numbers and other personal information.

According to a news release, Lawrence Memorial Hospital contacted Branson’s office about complaints from multiple patients who said they received unsolicited phone calls from home medical equipment and medical supply companies and that the companies asked for Medicare insurance numbers, doctor’s names and other personal information.

The office called the questions a red flag because there is no need for a company to request this information from a patient when a physician arranges home health care equipment or supplies. The release also recommended not sharing information such as date of birth, driver’s license number, credit card number, Social Security number or insurance information with unsolicited callers.

Those who think they may have been a victim of a Medicare scam are asked to call the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service at (800) 447-8477. Those who think they are victims of identity theft because of a Medicare scam are urged to call their local police department to file a report.
