Gas leak investigated at South Lawrence mobile home

A South Lawrence mobile home was evacuated while fire-medical personnel and area energy company officials investigate a reported gas leak.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical were dispatched to Easy Living Mobile Acres in the 3300 block of Iowa Street at 12:25 p.m. According to Tommy Johnson, a Black Hills Energy supervisor, a resident called the energy company after smelling gas in her home. Johnson said a technician detected a high amount of gas underground below the home and called in additional Black Hills officials and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Personnel.

Gas service was shut off to the home, and the home’s resident and a neighbor were evacuated for about an hour while crews investigated. Johnson said the exact cause of the leak was unclear but the company replaced the line under the home after a test revealed low pressure.

Johnson said gas was never detected inside the home and that the scene was under control within 40 minutes and gas service was expected to be restored to the home by late afternoon.
